The Week of Laziness - Fairy Tales

(Peace! Labour! May!)

In this essay I’d like to take a look at lazy characters of one English and two Russian fairy-tales, who had a piece of luck for being lazy.
We were taught to think that laziness – it’s bad and that a lazybone isn’t a good person.  Nevertheless, studying and comparing Russian and English fairy-tales I found out that we all know one lazy and at the same time good character since our childhood – for the Russians it’s Yemelya (Емеля). Let’s remember the plot of the fairy-tale: once upon a time there was a lazy and dense youngest brother Yemelya. He went to the well for water and caught a magic Pike, who promised to make all his dreams come true if he set her free. Yemelya agreed – and we were surprised to learn what his dreams were: first, he wanted to have all his work done for him and had a lot of fun looking at walking buckets. Then he ordered his sleigh to go without a horse and that strange transport crushed many people and when the citizens intended to punish him, commanded a bludgeon to punch them. After that Yemelya made a czar’s daughter fall in love with him – again with the Pike’s help – and married the girl. Didn’t Yemelya meet the magic Pike, nothing would happen to him.
For my study, I’ve read a lot of fairy-tales and can say for sure that Yemelya seems to be the only lazy but good character in Russian folklore. That’s why I’m surprised to hear that laziness as well fatalistic “blind faith in sheer luck” ( avos’ – авось) is considered to be one of the basic traits of the Russians.
Let’s remember other fairy-tales. The main male character is Ivan, the youngest son, or Ivan the Fool. Often he has two lazy and rude elder brothers. And remember what usually happens to them! Usually they come back home empty-handed, but the youngest brother, their laughingstock, Ivan the Fool, kind, industrious and clever guy becomes a czar or comes back home with lavish presents and a beautiful bride. The female characters unlike their step-mothers and step-sisters are industrious too. For example, the tale “Morozko” (“Jack Frost”) tells us about a family where an old widower with a daughter marries a woman who also has a daughter. The step-mother hates the little girl and makes her do all the house work. Her own daughter is very lazy and does nothing all day long. In the end the poor step-daughter is thrown out of the house into the winter forest. She meets Morozko – the master of the Winter and he takes her into his house. She does all the house work, cooks and repairs his clothes and Morozko lets her go home with lavish presents. The envious lazy daughter went to the forest too, meets Morozko and demands her presents, but she can do nothing and he sends her home with melting ice necklace and the trunk full of birds.
And here is a wonderful English fairy-tale, that looks out of place in the English folklore. “Tom-Tit-Tot” or “Gabertot”. Once upon a time a woman baked five pies and her daughter ate them, but when the king suddenly came up she lied that she had been singing about her daughter who  had weaved five linens. The king decided to marry the girl on condition that once a year she weave five linen a day for a month. The girl thought that in a year she would think how to wriggle out of this problem and the king might forget about his condition.  But in a year the king put the girl into the room with a spinning wheel and ordered to weave 5 linens by the night, if she failed she’d be executed the next day. The girl couldn’t weave but she was rescued by the queer creature, who agreed to help her on condition that she guess its name. Every day the creature weaved 5 linens a day, but the girl couldn’t guess the name right. The last day of the month she spied on her cunning helper and learned that its name was Tom Tit Tot. And she managed to cheat the death doing actually nothing. It’s rather difficult for a Russian reader to get the moral of this story:  a nameless girl, greedy eater and a lazybone didn’t deserve to be saved. The only interesting trait of her character is her optimism and Russian “blind faith in sheer luck” mentioned above, non-typical for the English girl.
As we see, laziness is a usual humans’ feature of character and despite these two fairy-tales, it has never been encouraged by the society. So, let’s get to work - Peace! Labour! May! are waiting. The chicken wont grill itself.

The Week of Laziness - Animals!

Meet the most LAZY animals in the world!

1. Sloths eat lots of low-calorie leaves, which are hard to digest, that’s why the animals have to economize energy. And we must admit that know how to do that – for example, they prefer hanging from their claws that using muscles. The sloths sleep 9 and a half hours a day, it’s not so much, in fact. But anyway when they are awake, they look very sleepy and can do only few things during the day:
-to chew leaves. If they catch the frog accidentally they’ll eat it too
-to have a chat with other sloths if they come,
- to come down to the ground once a week to the toilet
-and again – to sleep!
 2. Koala doesn’t need much – some eucalypt leaves and peace. The furry animals sleep up to 20 hours a day (do you still consider the sloths to be lazy?), and at night, after waking up at last, they obtain some eucalypt leaves. By the way, the koalas are so lazy, that they decided not to drink at all – search for water can take a lot of energy! – that’s why they’re satisfied with the leaves moisture.
 3. Quick and swift lion rests (notably – plays with his cubs, blinks from the sun, sleeps and turns his head ) about 20 hours a day! The rest of the time it hunts and eats. The sloths seem more and more out of place here.
 4. Bamboo eater giant pandas are hunter actually. But they’re too lazy. Sometimes they eat eggs and insects if they come across that kind of food, but they never hunt. But on the other hand they are not sleepyheads – they sleep just 8 hours and the rest of the day – 10-12 hours are busy with eating. And – it’s not their fault – the reason of this schedule is the food – leaves which are hard to digest!
5. Ive almost forgotten! Catsthey are the greatest lazybones in the world! 20 hours a day for sleep, the rest of the time – mischief, air and graces, hunting, caress and food.

But we can say ‘lazy’ about an animal only in comparison to our rustle-bustle life. I think fly consider us to be awkward, sleepy giants. And probably, the humans are the laziest animals in the whole planet.

Two more words - Zhirdyai and Prystshelyga. ZHIRdyai - sounds like a derivative from "zhir" - fat. But in fact, this word is from  "zherd' " and that means beanpole. So we have two absolutely different meanings.
And PRYSTSHelyga - sounds like prystsh -  pimple, though the real word is PROSTSHELYGA from "stshel' " - chinck or gap. And the real word means a person that can get into every gap easily, but not a person with pimples.

I'll unfriend* you!

One of my imaginary friends told me that having "removed" her ex-lover from friends on social networks she felt as if she literally had closed the door after him and it made her feel better. And I started thinking about this socially significant action - about "unfriending". I'd like to point out that saying FRIENDS I mean people you personally know and you have shared some events with. Not those millions of never seen men whose real names you don't remember.
Will you agree that creating a profile on the Internet, people form their second personality? It's like they split their soul and mind and give these parts to another being. The profile in the social network is like a rancoruos - and amicable at the same time- mirror, the mirror that reflects all the likes of the person, his thoughts, his appearance. It remembers everything you've been careless enough to show it. It can remind you that 2 years ago you had a fringe and you were worried about exams and here you felt blue and there you had been still dating N. BUT - you can change this memory and erase undesirable information. And it's easy to erase notes and pictures, but to "remove" a friend is more difficult.
Remember that being far away from your loved one, to see his/her user icon is like to see him/her in person! And if you go online, forgetting about lag time, and see that your beloved was on-line "15 min ago" you may cry with disappointment! You've missed each other, you've come to the place where he/she was 15 minutes ago and now only a note is left on the virtual table: "Miss you" blah-blah-blah. And during the insomnia, remember how lonely and idly you feel observing the lifeless list of your sleeping friends. And if suddenly someone is online it seems as if he opened his eyes and can see you. Though you may say nothing to each other. These icons hide real warm people and "remove" someone means to stop recieving news from him, to stop being interested in something that intersts him, to stop being friends - in reality! Probably, that's why looking for the data on social networks researches I often came across questions asked seriously: to remove or not to remove? Though, it's ridiculous.
*the verb unfriend appeared in the dictionaries in 2009.
